A great tattoo experience starts before you ever sit in the chair and continues well after you leave. Here's a simple guide to preparing for your appointment and caring for your new ink as it heals.
Before Your Appointment
Hydrate. Well-hydrated skin takes ink better and heals faster.
Prep your skin. Moisturize in the days leading up, but skip lotion the day of.
Get plenty of rest. You'll sit more comfortably when you're well-rested.
Eat well. Have a good meal beforehand, and avoid alcohol and excess caffeine.
Wear comfortable clothes. Choose something loose that gives easy access to the area being tattooed.
During and Right After (Day 1)
Your artist will clean and bandage the tattoo before you leave. Keep the protective covering on as instructed, then gently clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Always wash your hands first, and never touch fresh ink with unclean hands.
Days 2 to 3
Your tattoo may look dull and start to form light scabs — this is completely normal. Wash once or twice daily and apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific moisturizer.
Days 4 to 6
Peeling and itching set in. Resist the urge to pick or scratch — tap gently if the itch is intense, and let the scabs fall away on their own.
Days 15 to 30
Most surface healing is complete, though the skin can stay sensitive for a few more weeks. Keep moisturizing, and once fully healed, apply SPF 30 or higher whenever the tattoo is in the sun.
