How the Sun Damages Tattoos
Sunlight contains ultraviolet rays, including UVA and UVB, that penetrate the skin and affect tattoo pigment. The results include:
Fading. A sun-faded tattoo looks dull, as if the vibrant colors have been drained from it.
Distortion. Even crisp lines can blur with prolonged sun exposure.
Color changes. Without protection, ink hues can shift and take on gray or green tints.
Premature aging. Tattooing compromises the skin, making the area more susceptible to collagen breakdown from UV rays.
How to Protect Your Tattoo From the Sun
Proper aftercare. Follow your artist's instructions closely and keep fresh ink out of direct sunlight, which can fade colors prematurely.
Apply sunscreen. Sunscreen is your ink's new best friend. Apply it to fully healed tattoos regularly, especially when sweating or swimming.
Seek shade. The sun is strongest between about 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use trees, umbrellas, or other shade during outdoor activities.
Cover up. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing over inked areas as a physical barrier against UV rays.
