Getting pierced should be exciting, not risky. The difference between a smooth, well-healed piercing and a painful complication usually comes down to who does it and where. Here's how to make sure you're in good hands.
Choose the Right Piercing Artist
Not all piercers are created equal. Ask about their training and apprenticeship, and always review a portfolio of healed work. A skilled, certified piercer will happily answer your questions and make you feel comfortable before anything begins.
Choose the Right Studio
A reputable studio keeps clean, separated zones — a retail counter, a waiting area, a public bathroom, a dedicated piercing room, and a separate sterilization room. Look for sharps containers, an autoclave, a visible license, and current health permits.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Eat and hydrate. A full stomach and good hydration help prevent lightheadedness.
Get plenty of rest. You'll heal better when your body is well-rested.
Avoid alcohol and excess caffeine. Both can thin your blood and increase sensitivity.
Do a quick health check. If you're feeling unwell, reschedule — healing starts the moment you're pierced.
Aftercare Basics
Wash your hands before touching the area.
Leave the jewelry in and don't rotate it.
Keep makeup, lotions, and hair products away from the piercing.
Clean twice daily with a sterile saline solution.
